The picture of my house doesn't have my fence there..and it was put up 4 years ago! I'd like to know if there is an up to date one too so I'll be watching your relults!
Reply:I think it says between one and three years old on the home page. I don't know how to update it, I think you get the most up to date pictures they can show.

Where I live is shown really fuzzy and low resolution. It's a bit disappointing for that. I do wonder sometimes what is hiding under the fuzz.

Reply:I've tried several, but I think I like Google the best. It allows you to click and drag the line to alter the route you take. That's nice because sometimes the program will pick an odd route to get there and you wish you could pick your own.

Why can't you see people on Google maps?
Does anybody know if the software actively deletes images of people from Satellite images on google maps? Apart from the most crowded areas in citys there never seems to be any people anywhere. (Yes I know it's not a live feed before anyone answers) Also, does anyone know when the majority of images were taken. As the one of my house has to be more than 20years old now..

The photos come from all different times and different sources. The close up photos of major cities were actually taken from aircraft. Others were taken from satellite.
For example in the UK, a company used two light aircraft to survey the whole country over a period of several months.

some people in the blogosphere say that it is accurate to within an inch of the area. To get more accurate location systems I would suggest you get your own GPS system and do the best math you can on that. These softwares are just for the general appreciation of the thing you are trying to locate

"My Location" Problems with Google Maps - Bell HTC Touch?
I have a HTC touch from Bell Canada with unlimited data. I have the latest version of Google maps on my phone. I try to use the "My Location" feature but it tells me "Your handset doesn't seem to be compatible with My Location (Beta) feature". My friend has the same phone but from Rogers and he can get this feature to work. Does anyone know why it wont work on my phone? Do I need to change some settings or is it because Bell doesn't support that feature?

Why does Google maps not show the capital cities on their maps?
It is because Google maps are free. So if you want free stuff, you can't just expect them to show EVERYTHING. Maybe the maps have limited space, hence having not to show the capital cities. Also, the capital cities cannot be written on the maps as they might overwrite other names of places on the map or mislead people into thinking that name of the capital city is written over(say a road of building) is the capital city itself and the surrounding places are not the capital city.
Anyway, you can go to Google, pay premium prices for better viewage of the world.

Google's maps geographical pictures are provided by a company called NAVTEQ. It is not known publicly if there is a schedule to how frequent new versions of maps are licensed for use by Google Maps.

Is there like a google maps for outdoors sort of like online maps like outdoor explorer ordanance survey maps?
you could try multimap, google maps, streetmap or ordnance survey websites, but they only give you a small section of the OS Map. To get a larger map you have to pay, and you can get discs with them on - again, ordnance survey do these (and paper maps of course).
I couldnt suggest this is a good idea but using, say multimap and a standard graphics package you can copy the free preview, move along to the next bit and copy that, paste them together in the graphics package tomake a larger map of course. But I wouldnt suggest that since to get the larger maps they want you to pay

Not sure just what "kind" of outdoor recreation you mean here. Since I camp and hike wilderness areas, I rely on topographic maps most of the time. I get some from the BLM or go to terraserver to look up features of a given area.
I also use national geographic maps for Nevada especially if I need to create a map to display on my blog.
Reply:You can get free on line maps, but you are better off buying a map of your chosen area, if you are visiting somewhere because you get a fuller picture than on computer print out.
I couldnt suggest this is a good idea but using, say multimap and a standard graphics package you can copy the free preview, move along to the next bit and copy that, paste them together in the graphics package tomake a larger map of course. But I wouldnt suggest that since to get the larger maps they want you to pay

Not sure just what "kind" of outdoor recreation you mean here. Since I camp and hike wilderness areas, I rely on topographic maps most of the time. I get some from the BLM or go to terraserver to look up features of a given area.
I also use national geographic maps for Nevada especially if I need to create a map to display on my blog.
Reply:You can get free on line maps, but you are better off buying a map of your chosen area, if you are visiting somewhere because you get a fuller picture than on computer print out.

Just makes it too easy to plan an attack if you have a pretty detailed view of the target.

Those aerial images have to be at least a year old before they are posted on the internet. They also do not allow the user to zoom in as close as the military systems like them do.

Why does Google Maps deliver different maps through the API?
I recently discovered that they show different maps through their API than they show on their website. In fact, it looks like they show older maps through their API.

I have found the same map error on Google Maps and ViaMichelin. Do they buy map data from the same supplier?
The maps show a small wood in Hungary positioned on the wrong side of the road. If these two companies do not buy their map data from the same company, then one map supplier must be copying from another and duplicating the mistake. Does anyone know who supplies these companies with this data?

Go to Google Maps.
In the upper left hand corner theres the zoom tool. There is the Orange person over it.
You drag and drop it to where ever there is streets highlighted in yellow.
Then you see things in "street view" just by doing that. It's pretty cool its like actually being there. They dont have street view for the whole wold yet, so type in a popular city like Los Angeles or NYC.

Driving to Fort Polk Army Base from Houston--Google maps says to take LA-467?
But from the looks of the map, it doesnt look familiar from when i went there the first time.

I took I-10 East until you get to lake charles, LA. and then from there you get on 171 north, and its a straight shot up to fort polk.. just look for signs on the road that tell you when to turn into fort polks gates.. Its easy can't miss it.. Be careful cause the first gate is for army trucks and things and then the second one you come to will be for visitors and all others.. Just follow signs.. when your on 171 north, once you get into the town of deridder, just keep watching signs cause it can get confusing, but stay on 171 north till you get to fort polk.. and its not long after deridder.. Yes, and you can surf to m.google.com from your phone or just go http://www.google.com/mobile/nokia_stand...
I know it says "nokia_standard" but you could also try the blackberry version because that usually does a good job of finding your exact location relative to where you are.

I do not know when they last updated it, because they update different sections at different times.

I am using a windows mobile. In that i use Google maps. In the google maps program, an option is ' use GPS ? ' and if i activate it, there is no difference. I have a GPRS connection, and it says ' My location " is currently not available

the GPS connection must really comes from your carrier and not from the google. and some cases, if location cannot be displayed or not available, it also means that your cellphone is not a high powered CP. take note: not all cellphones that has GPS feature can display the map. it will depend on the transmission from your service provider and your CP.

the GPS connection must really comes from your carrier and not from the google. and some cases, if location cannot be displayed or not available, it also means that your cellphone is not a high powered CP. take note: not all cellphones that has GPS feature can display the map. it will depend on the transmission from your service provider and your CP.

Google maps does not work, all I get is a grey area but I can move around in the grey area?
I am running it under firefox browser in Kubuntu (Linux). Load images and Javascript is switched on in preferences.

Google maps does show direcrions. You have to do is click get directions and enter in both addresses and then you have it.

I saw on the new yesterday (I live in Philippines) and iPhone is comming out here in September with carriers, and my dad said he'd get me one if he could use the GPS or Google maps on it, and I've heard it does have Maps on it, but I was wondering if it could be used internationally, because we live in Asia and we visit the US every year, and we don't want to keep borrowing GPSs from relatives.

Regensburg and then the Austrian /German border.Follow road through Austria the new vienna underground bypass is now open. Dont forget to buy the toll or you pay 100 euro fine. On leaving Vienna look out for the Budapest road it is signposted which takes you through into Hungary. Dont forget the toll Remember you need to get through Budapest early like 06.00 am or you will be there forever.There are three border crossings which are all very easy . valea-Lui Mihai. Petea. And Oradea It takes us three days to travel Stopping once in Germany once in Hungary and then into Romania. Good luck any problems e-mail

Why can't I see street view on Google maps?
It was so easy before all I had to do was click on one of those buttons on the upper right hand corner. Now, I guess they removed it. Why? But, earlier I was checking out downtown Chicago and I don't know what I clicked on but it got me see the street view. It was amazing! I have pulled maps into other programs before... typically InDesign or Illustrator but it should be the same idea. You need to make the map an art file (ie: jpg) and import it in. If you cannot drag the image you want onto your desktop then you can always take a screenshot, then convert the image into a MS word friendly format (jpg would be easiest). I have pulled maps into other programs before... typically InDesign or Illustrator but it should be the same idea. You need to make the map an art file (ie: jpg) and import it in. If you cannot drag the image you want onto your desktop then you can always take a screenshot, then convert the image into a MS word friendly format (jpg would be easiest). Then place the picture file in to the document as you would with any clip art - under the Insert menu

recently some parts of the uk have been added to google maps street level and i've never heard so much complaining about "privacy invasion" other countries have this do they complain or is it a british disease?

It is awesome for maps, since it loads a lot faster than Google maps, and you can 'fly' to anywhere in the world, look at pictures, see both road and terrain, etc. You can even zoom out to see the entire globe and make the world spin if you're bored enough.

Yeah, I can see my house on Google Earth. My house isn't covered by anything and we have a car in the driveway. You can also see that our pool is closed. If you type my address in, though, it just brings you to my street. You need to mess around with the map a little bit to get to my house, but yeah, you can see it. The picture is old, though. We've changed our driveway (and gotten a different car) since it was taken.
When Google Earth first came out, you could type in the Pentagon and it would show you a picture of the top of the building in which you could see where the dumpsters were placed, etc. I don't know if they kept that in there, but it seemed like a stupid thing to do.

If you are using a browser with add-ons, such as Firefox with Tab Mix Plus you may have changed the settings so that this happens. You can reverse these changes, or if you can't work out the root of the problem you can use something like Firefox with Tab Mix Plus; change the settings to open all links in the same window.

What's this weird Google Maps object in Libya?
At approximately 27* 39' north, 22* 30' east (I think that's right), there's some kind of great big cloud of smoke and fireballs in Eastern Libya. Looks like an airport or something. Does anyone know what happened?
What's more, there's big fields of huge green dots slightly to the east. Anybody know what those are?

When I put in homes I have lived in, like now, the maps are off. Like now, it has my house 1/4 of a mile down the street. The maps are supposed to be better than that.

If you zoom in you should be able to see an aerial view of your neighbourhood, if there is an orange man to the right (just where you change the zoom) then click him and drag him in and you should get the street photos. My street hasn't been put on yet, so I can't do that.

There is no specified time frame within which all satellite photos get updated. Some satellite photos of well known cities (eg. Dubai) have not been updated in at least a year, and some photos have not been updated in several years.

Here is my top google clear search tip for you...click in to your google search...click the last search.....use the back arrow so the cursor is at the beginning of the word..then hold down the down arrow and at the same time press Del key till all history is gone.and will work this way in all searches
or you can hover your cursor on single letters once selected then delete.

I saw a street view of my grandparent's house and stuff. It wasn't too long ago, I know that, but about a month ago there was a house that was painted brown, and on Google Maps, it is still the original color. So, how often does this update?

It's updated when Google receives new satellite imagery from their various sources. This can change wildly depending on where the satellites have crossed over recently, and based on how long it takes for Google to stitch all these millions of images together to overlay the street data, especially for areas that you can zoom in pretty far to.
Some places may have a picture as recent as three months, or a few years. I think I read somewhere that Google tries to have all its images at least within four years, though my own city's images are -at least- four years old, so I'm not too sure about that.
In other words, there's just a lot of information for them to retrieve and put together, so it's not updated too often; maybe once every two or three years. And there's almost no real definite way to no how often your particular area is updated, other than just trying to find landmarks that aren't built yet, or other stuff, like the color of your grandparent's house.

How often is "Google Maps" updated? ?
It's updated when Google receives new satellite imagery from their various sources. This can change wildly depending on where the satellites have crossed over recently, and based on how long it takes for Google to stitch all these millions of images together to overlay the street data, especially for areas that you can zoom in pretty far to.
Some places may have a picture as recent as three months, or a few years. I think I read somewhere that Google tries to have all its images at least within four years, though my own city's images are -at least- four years old, so I'm not too sure about that.
In other words, there's just a lot of information for them to retrieve and put together, so it's not updated too often; maybe once every two or three years. And there's almost no real definite way to no how often your particular area is updated, other than just trying to find landmarks that aren't built yet, or other stuff, like the color of your grandparent's house.

Yes, google maps will pull down data as it is "drawing" the map on the screen. The maps are not stored locally on the device.

Customize Google maps for my own website?
If someone comes on to my website I want them to be able to search for specific locations on Google Maps inside my site that I setup, if you check out ononemap.com, this uses the same idea about showing where houses are for sale in the UK, type in your post code and you'll see what I mean.

Then copy the resulting URL from the address bar of the browser. Then use THAT url as a link in the website. The website visitor can then explore from there. (With Google maps you can also set several locations on the same map and have the little pointers showing up. Do it, and copy THAT URL for linking.) Works like a champ.

Does the definition (clarity) vary because they don't want to release all the data/ they want to sell it, or is it just a question of time before all areas will have the same clarity?

Iphone help, my google maps has change from miles to kilometers does anyone know how to change it back?

its simple the maps are set by region
so to change it back go to
-settings then general scroll down to international region format. Now the best one will be united states because we use miles instead of Km so just set it to United States and it will go back

I was checking out my address on google maps and WOW! there was a picture of my house. I was F, "en " around and started to hit arrows and "WTF" i had a view of the street lights and the sky??????? I've heard of the eye in the sky like in the casinos you know, but it was really wierd to see the sky view. How the hell did Google do it? Did they go around all over the world and take pics from every street at every angle????

My answer would be sign up with Lunarpages, install joomla for free, then install google maps extention for free on your joomla web site. All the things that I said takes less than 10 minutes if you know what you are doing. That's the easiest way. The directions are so wrong that they don't even have a clue as to where my house it. Resently someone tried to follow these and they got hopelessly lost.
