Google's maps geographical pictures are provided by a company called NAVTEQ. It is not known publicly if there is a schedule to how frequent new versions of maps are licensed for use by Google Maps.
I would guess only unless there is a geographically visible change in a particular region or newer/better resolution pictures become available.

Reply:Google doesn't own any satellites to take photos. Google will update their databases with publically available maps from the companies that *do* own satellites and photos, when those photos are so outdated, as to be semi-worthless to the company that owns them. In other words, when the photos are "free", Google will update.
