Why does Google Maps deliver different maps through the API?

I recently discovered that they show different maps through their API than they show on their website. In fact, it looks like they show older maps through their API.

You can see several screenshots here:

Why does Google do this? Is it due to license restrictions from their data providers, some intentional dithering (GPS anyone), or something else? Does yahoo do the same with their maps api?

One thing that is interesting is that the Satelite images are the exact same. It is possible that all updates have to go through some process before they are relased to API while the process for the updates becoming available to themselves is a much shorter process.

I have not noticed there being a difference in Yahoo Maps and Yahoo API, however I do personally like Yahoo Maps a lot better.
