Can you use the iphones' google maps/gps internationally?

I saw on the new yesterday (I live in Philippines) and iPhone is comming out here in September with carriers, and my dad said he'd get me one if he could use the GPS or Google maps on it, and I've heard it does have Maps on it, but I was wondering if it could be used internationally, because we live in Asia and we visit the US every year, and we don't want to keep borrowing GPSs from relatives.

As of now, the iPhone does not have any GPS in it.

The way in which the Google Maps (in iPhone) works is like this: It finds out the tower number of the cell phone tower you are currently connected to. It then finds out from the Google database through the internet and finds out the approximate co-ordinates of your current position. This is shown on the google maps. The rpe-requisite for this to work is that you need to have a data connection (GPRS/3G) with your provider. Now, if you are travelling to US, this will work only if you put a SIM of US carrier which includes a data plan. Other than that, it shud work without any problem. But keep in mind that the location which is shown is approx(usually within 1 km. radius) and sometimes it could be wrong too (the software is still in beta)
